A Brief History
The Leadership Huntington Foundation has a distinguished history of serving the citizens of Huntington and impacting the Long Island Region.
In 1995, the Huntington Township Chamber Foundation, with support from the independent Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, created a community leadership program to train current and emerging leaders. This program was simply called Leadership Huntington.
At that time, the mission of the Huntington Township Chamber Foundation was “to play an active role as a catalyst to identify, coordinate, and initiate projects with the potential to positively impact the local economy and the quality of life in Huntington”.
In addition to starting the Leadership Huntington program, past projects of the Huntington Township Chamber Foundation included the initiation and successful implementation of two model child care centers; a primary health care facility – the Dolan Family Health Center - with Huntington Hospital as lead agency for the medically under-served; an eldercare project; and WorkPlus, which addressed issues resulting from legislated welfare reform, as well as the Huntington Community Council, set up to co-ordinate, and meet the needs of Huntington’s not-for-profit organizations.
By 2007, following numerous successful projects and 12 years of graduating community-trustees into the community from the Huntington Township Chamber Foundation’s Leadership Huntington program, many of the Huntington Township Chamber Foundation Board members were comprised of graduates of the Leadership Huntington Program.
Having developed a mission and vision of its own that complimented the mission of the Huntington Township Chamber Foundation, the Leadership Huntington program found that its graduates and active supporters had overgrown the Foundation that created the program. The board of the Huntington Chamber Foundation and the Leadership Huntington Program Steering Committee decided to become one. Today that organization is known as the Leadership Huntington Foundation.
The mission of the Leadership Huntington Foundation is “to stimulate positive change by engaging and inspiring a broad range of citizens to embrace community trusteeship”.
Today the Leadership Huntington Foundation operates two programs – The Leadership Huntington Flagship Program and the Mobile Workshop Tours. The Huntington Community Council, an affiliation of locally based not-for-profit organization is also coordinated through the Leadership Huntington Foundation.
The Leadership Huntington Flagship Program was created from best-practices and professional leadership training materials from around the country, as well as from the invaluable experience and talents of more than 50 active volunteer leaders and planners from our extraordinary community.
The Leadership Huntington Foundation operates the first and only community leadership program on Long Island, joining a distinguished network of more than 1,000 community leadership programs from across the country through a professional relationship with the national Community Leadership Association.
The Mobile Workshop Tours provide a one-day glimpse into the history and cultural resources of the Town of Huntington, as well as the challenges we face today as a community.
The Huntington Community Council assists in coordinating and meeting the needs of Huntington’s not-for-profit organizations.
As a 501(c)3 organization the Leadership Huntington Foundation is set up to accept tax deductible contributions that help underwrite the programs and activities of the organization.
The Leadership Huntington Foundation is a non-partisan, independent, member supported organization designed to Develop, Connect, and Engage a broad range of citizens to actively embrace community trusteeship.
Having graduated over 250 participants from its Flagship Leadership Huntington Community Trustee program, Leadership Huntington’s influence is found in every corner of our community.
