Congratulations to the Class of 2010 on

its Fifth Anniversary Year!

The 2010 "Best Class Ever" saw the sights, learned history, explored tough issues, and developed new skills. As one classmate summarized it, they're "Everyday people, extraordinary citizens, Leadership Huntington."
After their opening retreat at the historic Seminary for the Immaculate Conception with Craig Rider, the Class of 2010 explored business, government and nonprofits, race, healthcare, drugs and gangs, energy, community environment and environmental sustainability. One time it was energy, next time it was the arts. As always, graduates, supporters and local notables offered their time, expertise and tremendous value.

The Class of 2010 was engaged and enthusiastic; present both to each other and the matter at hand. We appreciate what they've already done, and look forward to even more great things to come.

We believe the best solutions start locally, with citizens who understand the issues, their communities, and their own vision and values. Leadership Huntington provides that education, fostering individual initiative and community trusteeship, building connections, and inspiring solutions.

Thanks for another GREAT Conversation

Common Core: Uncommon Challenges

It was a full house for our last Community Conversation when we talked with Superintendents from a variety of local districts about Common Core -- how it came about, what happened with the roll out, and what does it mean for our children. This is not an easy topic. We are exceptionally grateful to our excellent audience, panelists, and moderator for engaging in this important and though provoking discussion.

More images are available on our Facebook Page.
We look forward to announcing when this will air on local public access television so you can check it out, too.

LI Youth Spoke -- were you listening? Check out
the News12 Coverage here. Images are available on our Facebook Page. We are grateful for the number of folks we noticed making this a real social media event. We thought it was a great conversation, too!

Community Conversations raise public awareness, encourage community engagement and highlight libraries as the modern day public square. Our last conversation focused on what young people observe and experience on Long Island, their future plans, and why so many of our best and brightest don't intend to stay. They and the audience talked about housing and transportation. They talked about taxes, and concerns about mounting student loans. They talked about the need for Long Island -- and beyond -- to innovate and address our growing challenges. Half of that dynamic panel is determined to stay. The other half is out of here.

The panel (from left, above) featured Jessie Stein, Huntington High School; Rachel Weinstein, Cold Spring Harbor High School; Tara Bono, Empower Solar; Joshua Lafazan, Syosset School Board. Dr. Nathalia Rogers, Director of the American Communities Institute at Dowling College moderated. We also heard from Stephen Kariolis, Public Relations Associate for Canon, who was interviewed by Joan Cergol, Director of the Huntington Community Development Agency (below).

Our Acting Director, Katheryn Laible had a few great conversation with Mr. Long Island, Michael Watt, too!
Check it out...

and then the follow up with the original champion of Community Conversations on Long Island, the Director of the Cold Spring Harbor Library, Helen Crosson (Class of 2013):

Another Best. Class. Ever. Continues!

Hot Topics

Leadership Huntington seeks to be a source of quality information on local issues, and a bridge between regional thinking and local implementation, as well as between expert analysis and community understanding. We have embarked on an ambitious partnership with Huntington's eight libraries to launch "Community Conversations" -- public events highlighting the potential of libraries to serve as a modern-day public square. We hope you come and engage in these forums for civil discourse on issues important to our lives, or families and our future.
